What sort of plastic shoud I use?

There are 4 types depending on the strength, thickness and size of sheet you require. Access Plastics will cut to size at no extra cost and we can also deliver Nationwide

1) Acrylic perspex

The cheapest at €55.81 for a sheet 8ft x 4ft. Acrylic perspex is clear like glass and approx. 40 times stronger than glass & half the weight at the same thickness. It is UV stablised which means no yellowing, whitening or cracking due to exposure. Acrylic perspex does not have a fire rating.

2) Polycarbonate
€86.00 for a sheet 8ft x 4ft. Polycarbonate is clear like glass and approx. 200 times stronger than glass. Again it is UV stablised and overall a stronger material than acrylic perspex so ideal if there is a risk of airborne debris like branches, birds, stone throwing or footballs! Polycarbonate has a BS476: Part 7 Class IY fire rating.

3) UV Polycarbonate FSX
Available in larger sheets 10ft x 6ft and costing €213.00 per sheet. It has the same strength properties as standard polycarbonate however the UV grade polycarbonate carries a guarantee for prolonged life (10years) in extreme outdoor exposed conditions.

4) Multi-wall Polycarbonate
This is a hollow/chambered sheet available in very large sheets 7mtrs long x 2.1mtrs wide. Again it is polycarbonate, very strong but extremely light and is also Uv stablised. Multi-wall comes in 3 thicknesses.  1 air cavity (10mm), 2 air cavities one on top of the other (16mm) or 4 air cavities (25mm).

10mm (twinwall) @ €20.00 per sq. mtr
Used in most applications for side passages, lean tos, BBQ shelters, garden sheds & greenhouses etc.

16mm (triplewall) @ €25.00 per sq. mtr
Generally used in conservatory roofs, car ports and roofing applications

25mm (fivewall) @ €30.00 per sq. mtr
A great insulator due to the thickness and air cavities. Used in theatre productions (sound insulation), greenhouses & swimming pools (thermal insulation) and also in numerous outdoor applications such as roofing, car wash screening, car ports and general building applications.

Did you know?

  • Acrylic perspex is also available in Black and Opal in thicknesses of 3mm and 5mm. Opal, whch is a white milky colour. It is translucent but not transparent, meaning it will let let light thru but you cannot see thru it. It’s ideal for light boxes, photography & exhibition applications. You would see it in a hospital on the lightbox a doctor uses to view x-rays.
  • Polycarbonate is also available Opal & Bronze tinted but only in larger area sheets 10ft x 6ft. Please contact the Access Plastics sales office on 01 801 0022 for thickness and availability.
  • Modern plastics have UV stabilisers extruded into the sheet during the manufacturing process to prevent yellowing, whitening and loss of strength.
